Simferopol - the gate of the Crimea
A favorable geographical location of the city makes it play a role of the capital. After the annexation of the Crimean peninsular by the Russian crown, it was necessary to determine an administrative center of the annexed lands. Prince Grigiriy Potyomkin proposed to build the main city of the Crimea near a small Tatar village of Ak-Mechet. A priest and a historian E.Bulgaris invented the name of the city Simferopol, in transalation from Greek it means a city-collector. During the whole period of its existence the city did not change its status of the regional center.
Nowadays the population of Simferopol is about 400 000 people - it is the biggest city of the Crimea, a center of economic, cultural and scientific life of the republic.
On of the biggest international airports in Ukraine is located outside the city. Airliners of many air companies of the world are services here.
